Our Graham's Top Website Tips

‘Our Graham’s’ top 5 website tips

A website is your window to the world so making sure it’s right is vitally important.  In this blog, our Digital Director Graham Walker gives his five top tips on how to create the perfect site.

1. The devil’s in the details

Before you even start looking at the visual aspect of your new website put together the site plan. This includes what headers and drop down subjects need to be included. If it helps, put yourself in the shoes of potential visitors – why are they viewing your site and what are the obvious places they will go to find the information they need?

2. Look like a million dollars

From having great photography and design, to not going overboard on the visual effects and text, your website needs to look good to entice visitors to have a browse. Think of it as a shop window – you’re more likely to pop in if an impact is made from the outside.  Therefore, don’t be afraid of a bit of white space; too much going on can make it difficult for your visitor to find what they’re looking for.

3. Time for a makeover

To ensure the site looks at its best, now is a great time to think about updating your branding. An outdated or poor logo can look really out of place on a shiny new website, so how about giving it a bit of a refresh? We’re not suggesting a complete overhaul, but maybe a slight update.  We have a team of designers who will take aspects of your current branding and bring it in to the 21st century.

4. Here’s my number, so call me maybe

There’s no point in having the perfect website if people have trouble finding out how to get hold of you, so make it easy for them to contact you. Whether that means having your company phone number on constant view, or a contact form on every page, don’t hide from your potential customers.

5. In analysis we trust

We’ll add Google Analytics to every website we build; it’s a goldmine of information that will show how many hits your site is having, where the hits are coming from and what pages are most popular.  Use this information to constantly update your site by making pages that are popular more prevalent.  The reports can look quite complex, but we can show you what to look for.

The analytics will also highlight how people are looking at your site, so although people tend to find a website by searching on a PC, returning visitors will generally view your site using a tablet or smartphone – make sure your site is responsive so it’s viewable on all devices.
