Best Practice in Primary Reading and Writing

Figures show that around 780 million adults worldwide cannot read or write. With government surveys suggesting that the UK’s standards in English have slipped in comparison with other countries, in March last year, Ofsted called on providers of early years, schools and further education and skills to renew a national drive for higher standards and for more engagement with parents and learners. Ofsted’s reports over the last couple of years, Moving English Forward (published in March 2012) and Removing barriers to literacy (in January 2011) highlighted that too many of our children and young people are falling behind at the beginning of education and lack the practical skills to successfully make their way in the adult world.

A solid foundation in reading and writing is crucial to a child’s success as they progress through primary school, into secondary school and then in later life. But, in spite of the hard work of teachers and pupils, too many children are currently not reaching the expected reading and writing levels at age 7 and age 11. The coalition Government is determined to raise literacy standards in our schools, especially of those not achieving the expected level.

The new Ofsted framework and the 2012 Teachers’ Standards focus strongly on these topics.

‘The teaching of reading, writing, communication is highly effective and cohesively planned and implemented across the curriculum’ (Ofsted)

Salford Professional Development will be holding a Best Practice in Primary Reading and Writing course in conjunction with the National Education Trust on 3rd October, Salford, which will present practical ideas to ensure primary pupils secure strong outcomes, and show teachers how they can best demonstrate good progress in English and literacy lessons. A range of excellent resource materials for the classroom will be given to each delegate in order to ensure a better quality of education for primary classes.
