Prudent Antimicrobial Prescribing

Venue: Hallam Conference Centre
44 Hallam Street

Date: 8 May 2014

Synopsis: This conference focuses on improving prescribing practice and antimicrobial stewardship in hospitals, a key recommendation of the national 5 year antimicrobial resistance strategy.

“Antimicrobial resistance poses a ‘catastrophic threat’ if action is not taken”
Prof Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health 2013

The new five year antimicrobial resistance strategy outlines steps including:

“Improve education and training around the prescribing of antibiotics to reduce inappropriate usage and make sure patients get the right antibiotics, at the right time and for the right duration.”

The conference will cover implementing the strategy in hospitals, understanding what interventions work to improve antimicrobial prescribing, an extended session on antimicrobial stewardship, ensuring prudent antibiotic prescribing in nursing and by junior doctors, ensuring correct diagnosis before prescribing, the role of electronic prescribing in improving antimicrobial prescribing practice and developing the role of the antimicrobial pharmacist.
