Synopsis: This training day will look at control and restraint in the context of the Human Rights Act, the Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act and other relevant legal and ethical principles.

However, inappropriate use, and the lack of detailed documentation of decisions, can make healthcare professionals vulnerable to accusations of mistreatment. Objectives: •Understand what constitutes restraint; physical, chemical and psychological •Know when restraint can be used •Understand when restraint must be used •Through case studies learn about using restraint in specialist areas e.g. mental health and accident and emergency •Provide an overview of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards •Practical guidance on documenting control and restraint
