Public Sector Event

Retaining influence in Europe after Brexit

Venue: Institute for Government, 2 Carlton Gardens, London, SW1Y 5AA

Date: 22 Jan 2020

Synopsis: In 2016, the-then foreign secretary Boris Johnson said “while the UK is leaving the EU, it is not leaving Europe”. The UK and the EU will still need to deal with shared problems such as climate change and terrorism. The UK will also want to shape EU rules on data and health and safety standards that will continue to affect it after Brexit.

But the UK will find it much harder to do so once it is no longer ‘in the room’. In this session, speakers will explore how the UK must adapt the ways it engages the EU and why failing to do so could damage its long term interests.

Our Panel:

  •  Sir Ivan Rogers KCMG, former UK Permanent Representative to the EU, 2013-2017
  •   Nicole Sykes, Head of EU Negotiations, Confederation of British Industry
  •   Georgina Wright, Senior Researcher, Institute for Government
  •   Further panellist to be confirmed

The event will be chaired by Joe Owen, Programme Director, Institute for Government.

There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.
