Supporting Autistic Children in Education Conference 2023

Synopsis: With increasing rates of diagnosis, one in every 100 children in the UK is now estimated to have autism, of which 70% are in mainstream education. Despite this huge numbers of children, parents and families report that the mainstream system is failing to meet their needs. The recent SEND review highlights the challenges facing students with SEND and the need to implement urgent change.

School report 2021, National Autistic Society:

  • 74% of parents said their child’s school did not fully meet their needs
  • Seven in 10 autistic children say that the biggest thing that would make school better is having a teacher who understands autism. 
  • Over 50% of autistic pupils would like help in school, to understand how to get on with friends and classmates
