Reducing Teacher Workload to Boost Retention and Improve Wellbeing

Venue: Online

Date: 19 Apr 2023

Synopsis: Attend this new half-day masterclass to understand the part that school leaders play in reducing teacher workload, and the impact this can have on teacher recruitment, retention and well-being.

Details:

We have a teacher retention crisis in our schools. And an increasing proportion of teachers leave the profession for other sectors rather than retiring, suggesting working conditions rather than age were driving them out.

Although there are myriad reasons why teachers quit the classroom, topping the table in nearly every survey is teacher workload...

According to a NAO survey, 67% of school leaders report that workload is a barrier to teacher retention. Meanwhile, a report by CooperGibson Research on behalf of the Department for Education entitled ‘Factors affecting teacher retention: qualitative investigation’ published in March 2018, found that workload remained the most important factor influencing teachers’ decisions to leave the profession and most solutions to address retention were linked in some way to workload.

So, the theory is simple: reduce teacher workload and solve the teacher retention crisis. But how can school leaders reduce teacher workload without adversely affecting student outcomes? And is it just about cutting workload, or might it also be about changing the nature of the work that teachers are expected to do?

This online masterclass explores the issues and offers practical solutions for school leaders to implement immediately.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Headteachers, Deputy Heads, Assistant Heads, School Business Managers, Heads of Year, School Governors and other members of the SLT.
