Event Summary

There is concern about high levels of school absence since the Covid-19 pandemic. In Scotland, the school attendance rate in 2022-23 was 90.2%, the lowest on record and down from 92% in 2021-22. Children who miss a large proportion of school time are less likely to attain a good education and achieve their true potential.

Holyrood Insight’s School Attendance Scotland Conference will address the challenges, spotlighting both preventative and restorative measures, through a mixture of focussed expert sessions, in-depth case studies, and interactive panels.

We will explore the triggers and share innovative solutions to help you to track, monitor and improve attendance. You will hear from the Commission for School Reform, and a variety of primary and secondary schools, local authorities and partners who will share insights and strategies; how to map and monitor pupils at risk of truancy; how to design tailored early interventions; and how to identify risk factors such as safeguarding issues, mental health, special educational, physical and emotional health needs.

We will look at how best to engage vulnerable pupils and families when planning an attendance strategy and how to develop collaborative pathways to keep children in school.

You will also learn about how to make the best use of available funding, including using PEF to cover specific needs of children. We will spotlight how to provide the right support for young people with ASN and for those that don’t meet the threshold, those dealing with anxiety and emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA).

Best practice sessions will teach you how to build more inclusive spaces, to design flexible curriculums, and to identify and develop skills, to maximise attainment.
