Public Sector Event
Comprehensive Nurse-Led Assessment Of The Older Person
Venue: Hallam Conference Centre
44 Hallam Street
Date: 7 Mar 2014
Synopsis: The masterclass will be interactive and dynamic - involving discussions, case analysis, group work and lead lectures; all leading to the formation of a personal action plan for continual professional development on return to the clinical setting.
This master class will encourage nurses who are responsible for the assessment of older people to ‘think outside the box’ beyond the normal formalities of form filling to question what is the most appropriate assessment at a particular point in time. The aim is to broaden a general knowledge base of different assessments available and to enhance the quality/transferability of completed assessments. We all have limited time to assess – this master class will help you to get the most from your assessment and conserve valuable nursing time. Most of all the concept of the ‘one size fits all’ assessment will be challenged in order to introduce new ways of assessing. The day includes: •A brief review of national policies, which underpin current contemporary assessment practices •Analysis of ageing: normal, intrinsic and deleterious •An overview of the key principles used for comprehensive geriatric assessment •Evaluation of current assessment tools – interdisciplinary considerations •Presentation of systems for assessment – discussing advantage / disadvantages •Lead lectures on dementia and delirium This day will be most useful to experienced nurses - regardless of setting (acute, community or intermediate care). It is not an advanced practice course – but will require some knowledge of anatomy and physiology to get the best from the day. The facilitator has 25 years of nursing experience with expertise at Masters level in the topic of older people. She has published widely audits and research arising from the care of the older person. Her current remit includes higher- level research and clinical practice, mentoring of senior registrars and advanced nurse practitioners.
